I would suggest playing safe to book a particular train in advance. I made a mistake a few weeks ago in Shanghai that waiting until two days earlier to book it and only to find out that my top three trains were sold out (it's not Shanghai to Beijing route, but there were still >30 trains for that day) While I was lucky to get a ticket for that day, it did disrupt my schedule.
